Dancing with Spider Medicine

I have a new dance partner, the spider who insists on building her web across my front door steps, daily. At first I mindlessly wandered into the chest-height web cursing it and the spider. Lately though, I’ve taken to really seeing the web and her, admiring her tenacity and the beauty of the web when the sun hits it just so. It occurred to me that she has as much right to that space as I do, after all we are all interconnected and she and her web are obviously in my face to teach me a lesson.

Every afternoon now, when I reach into my mailbox I am aware of a tiny strand connecting it to the bush along side, and following that thread I travel to the first post of the front steps. From there this amazing web stretches across the span of the walkway connecting to the bushes on the other side. While this distance is only six people feet, it must be vast spider miles. There she is, poised in the center of her web, finished with her days work, waiting for some unsuspecting insect or person.

I bow and apologize to her. Gently I pick the one strand from the mailbox and the whole web collapses as I lay it to one side on the bushes. I see her drop to the ground. She’s okay and tomorrow afternoon when I go to the mailbox we will take up our dance where we left off.

This is such an amazing metaphor for where I am right now weaving a new life, a new way of being in the world. With each new web I weave, the hand of the Divine gently sets it aside for me to weave again, until I get it just so.

Spider in her web today

Spider in her web today

From: Jamie Sams – Medicine Cards:  Spider weaves the web of fate … the wheel of life. Spider is the female energy of the creative force (Shakti) that weaves the beautiful designs of life….she may be telling you to create, create, create! The most important message from Spider is that you are an infinite being who will continue to weave the patterns of life and living throughout time. Do not fail to see the expansiveness of the eternal plan.
